Basic Granny Square

This is the easiest square I know.g1

The squares can be made as small or as large as you want, for example I used this as the start of a cotton bag.

When making a Granny Square blanket, you can either have the squares all the same size or vary them (Babette)

This pattern consists of making clusters of 3 trebles followed by 1 chain. There is one cluster in each side gap and 2 clusters in each corner.

Require:

  • 4 mm hook
  • Assorted DK yarn (best not to mix yarn types)

Stitches

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • tc – treble crochet

g3
Foundation. (Green yarn)

Magic circle, 3 ch (counts as 1st tc) 2 tc into loop, 1 ch, *3 tc into loop, 1 ch* Repeat * * 2 more times, join with sl st.

G4.jpgRound 1. (Blue yarn)

3tr,  ch, 3 tr, 1 ch. (2 clusters) into each chain gap of previous row

join circle with sl st.

g5Round 2 (Green yarn)

1 cluster in the chain spaces in each side; 3 tc, 1 ch

2 clusters in the corner spaces: 3 tr,1 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch

join circle with sl st

g6Round 3 onwards (Blue yarn)

1 cluster in each side chain space; 3 tc, 1 ch There will be on extra space per round in each side

2 clusters in the corner spaces: 3 tr,1 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch

join circle with sl st

If only using one colour I cheat by turning the square and working into the last chain gap in the previous round rather than slip stitching across to the next gap.

If you do that you will need to use 3 “turning chain” to make first treble in each round.
